Spiropyran (SP) that can convert into blue-colored merocyanine under force has been incorporated various polymer matrices to develop strain sensors and damage reporting applications. Herein, the SP mechanophore-incorporated liquid crystal elastomers (SP-LCEs) are synthesized for the first time through a combination of aza-Michael addition reaction and photocrosslinking. Interestingly, the mechanochromic responses of SP-LCEs can be dramatically altered depending on the stretching direction with respect to the nematic director. Further, we demonstrate that direct-ink-writing can be employed to print diverse SP-LCE geometries, and modulate the activation strain of SP-LCE. The ability to program the mechanochromic response of SP-LCE can pave the way to develop an interesting class of anti-counterfeiting materials and strain sensors. |
